AIPIA in UNINFO: participation in the technical standardisation of Artificial Intelligence

UNINFO is the standardisation body federated to UNI, the Italian Standardisation Body, competent for information technologies and their applications: it develops the national technical standards of the sector and represents Italy in the European technical committees of CEN and the international ones of ISO and IEC that deal with information technology. The work is organised in technical committees. Artificial intelligence has its own, UNI/CT 533.

UNI/CT 533 is the UNINFO technical committee that follows standardisation in the field of artificial intelligence: it is the national reference for the standardisation programme of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 Artificial Intelligence and of CEN/CENELEC JTC 21 Artificial Intelligence, and it provides the Italian position to the committees that develop AI standards. It has working groups on AI-enabled health informatics, conformity assessment of AI systems, strategic advice and cybersecurity. The standards it produces are voluntary.

It means that AIPIA completed its membership of UNINFO on 4 September 2026 in the category of Soci Effettivi (full members) and takes part in the work of the UNI/CT 533 Artificial Intelligence committee through the technical experts it appoints, with the right to follow the working documents and to contribute to the national position. Publication in the public list of members follows UNINFO's timing. The link appears on the Italian page when the probe sees AIPIA in the list.

AIPIA is a professional association under Italian Law 4/2013 that takes part as a member in the work of a UNINFO technical committee through the experts it appoints: it is not a standardisation body, it is not accredited by UNI, it does not publish standards and it does not certify the conformity of products, services or people to UNI standards. Standards are published by UNI and the federated bodies. Certification is done by accredited third-party bodies.

The experts are the people AIPIA appoints as technical experts at UNINFO to follow the work of UNI/CT 533 Artificial Intelligence, up to five under the terms of membership, and this page lists them only when the appointment is formal: today the appointed expert is Rafael Alberto Patron, Chair of the Scientific-Technical Committee and Board member of AIPIA. The experts take part on behalf of the association. They are neither members nor delegates of ISO or CEN.

Because technical standards translate into verifiable requirements the principles of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the AI Act, which refers to European harmonised standards for the presumption of conformity of high-risk systems: those who work with artificial intelligence will find in those standards the vocabulary, the risk management methods and the assessment criteria that customers and authorities will use. Following them closely means arriving prepared. AIPIA does so from inside the national committee.

UNI/CT 533 is the national committee linked to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 Artificial Intelligence, the international subcommittee that develops AI standards, and to CEN/CENELEC JTC 21 Artificial Intelligence, the European committee that prepares the harmonised standards required by the AI Act: the Italian positions are born in the committee and reach the two committees through UNINFO. AIPIA takes part as a member of the national committee. It is not a member of the international committees.
